Manuel Gregorio Tavárez

For English version press HERE

Born in San Juan Puerto Rico, on November 28, 1843 of a French father and Puerto Rican mother. He began his musical studies in San Juan but at the age of 15 years old he moved to Paris where he enrolled in the Music Conservatory studying under the renowned Professors Auber and D'Albert. He had to interrupt his studies due to a stroke that paralyzed his left hand and caused hearing problems. Back in Puerto Rico he could overcome those problems and after giving several recitals in San Juan, he moved to Ponce where he became a piano teacher.

He taught his students the French piano technique and style. He motivated the creative talent of his most famous pupil Juan Morel Campos. His daughter, Elisa, was also a pianist who achieved international stardom.

Tavárez is considered the Father of the Puerto Rican Danza . He was responsible to raise the danza to a higher artistic level. He gave it a delicate and romantic touch that has made it possible for it to reach the concert stage, although somewhat limited to date. His most famous composition, the beautiful danza "Margarita", composed in 1870, is a good example of the fine and polished style this composer put into this genre.

Other well known compositions are his danzas: La Sensitiva (The Sensitive one), La Ondina, La Ausencia (Absense), ¿Me amas? (Do you love me?, Un Recuerdito (A little remembrance) and Pobre Corazón (Poor heart).
